AI Travel Is Mostly Hype. Meet the Exception.

Every travel company now claims an AI. Nearly all of them mean a chatbot that summarises the help centre. Here is how to tell theatre from the real thing, and where the real thing lives.

    Carol
    Community Manager, Tratok

The travel industry discovered AI the way it discovers everything: as a press release first and a product later, if ever. The result is a landscape of “AI trip planners” that generate the same beige itinerary for everyone, and “AI assistants” that answer your booking question with an article about how bookings work in general. The intelligence is real; the connection to anything is not. An oracle with no eyes is just a voice.

The test for real travel AI is one question: does it know YOUR trip? Not trips. Yours.

The three grades of “travel AI”

    The parrot
Rephrases the FAQ with a friendly tone. Ask about your booking and it explains the concept of bookings. Most of the industry stops here and issues the press release.
    The dreamer
Generates lovely generic itineraries: “Day 1: arrive, explore the old town.” Inspiring, unbookable, and identical for every user who asks. A brochure that talks.
    The concierge
Wired into your live account: your reservations, your balance, your ecosystem. Answers with your numbers, acts with your passkey as the final word. This grade has exactly one resident. Her name is Tara.

    The same question, three answers

    You ask Parrot Dreamer Tara
“When is my next trip?” “Check My Bookings” “Anywhere! Where to?” ✓ The date, hotel and code
“What is my balance?” An article about wallets Cannot say ✓ The figure, to the decimal
“Send TRAT to my friend” Escalates to email Politely lost ✓ Staged, your passkey completes

Why can Tratok field a concierge while giants field parrots? Because the concierge grade is not an AI problem. It is an architecture problem. An assistant can only know your trip if the trip lives in one ecosystem: bookings, wallet, chat and social in a single account she can read, guarded by a passkey she cannot override. The legacy players would each need to become Tratok before their AI could become Tara. We suspect they will attempt the press release first.

Anyone can bolt a chatbot onto a booking site. Only an ecosystem can grow a concierge.

    Questions travellers ask

How do I test any travel AI in ten seconds?

Ask it something only your account knows: your next trip, your exact balance. A parrot deflects, a dreamer improvises, a concierge answers. There is currently one concierge.

Is an AI with account access not dangerous?

It would be, without the vault model: reading is instant, but anything that moves value is staged for your review and completed only by your passkey. Intelligence with a biometric leash.

Where do I meet the exception?

Ask Tara, on the home screen of tratok.net. Bring the ten-second test. She enjoys it.
