You Can Now Call Each Other on Tratok

Voice and video calls are live inside TRATchat. Tap the handset in any conversation and it rings on their phone, wherever they are on the site.

Carol
Community Manager, Tratok

Messaging is wonderful right up to the moment it is not. You are trying to describe which corner of the terminal you are standing in, or what the room actually looks like, or why the plan has to change in the next ten minutes. That is a phone call, and until now Tratok did not have one.

It does now. Open any conversation in TRATchat and there are two new buttons in the header: voice, and video. Press one and the other person’s phone rings.

No phone numbers. No third party app to install. No asking somebody for their details before you can hear their voice.

How it works, from both ends

It rings wherever they are on Tratok
Not only in the chat window. If they are signed in and reading the Feed or checking their wallet, the call card slides down over whatever they are looking at, with your photograph on it, and a green button to answer.
And on their phone if they are not
If they are away from the site entirely, the ring arrives as a notification on their phone, carrying your name and your picture, with Answer and Decline right on the notification. Tap Answer and you are connected.
The whole call happens where you are
Answering does not throw you out of what you were doing. The call opens as an overlay on the page you are already on, with mute, camera toggle and a duration timer.
Missed calls do not vanish
If nobody picks up, the ring notification is replaced by a missed call note, a row appears in the chat thread itself, and it lands in your notification bell. You can see who tried to reach you and call them straight back.

Voice or video, and you choose which

A voice call shows the other person’s photograph and a quiet pulse while you talk, with no camera anywhere near it. A video call gives you them full screen with yourself tucked into the corner. Mute and camera can be flipped at any point, and if your camera is already being used by something else the call quietly falls back rather than failing.

It sounds like Tratok, in your language

Both ends have their own sound. The caller hears a ringback tone while it rings out, and the person being called hears a soft marimba chime, both written in house rather than licensed from a stock library, so a Tratok call sounds like a Tratok call.

Every word of the call screen, and every call notification, arrives in the reader’s own language. A German member calling a French member sees German while the other sees French, on the same call.

Where this earns its keep

Guest and host
Before you arrive, and while you are there
A quick video call to see the room, the entrance, the door code panel that never photographs well. Far faster than fifteen messages, and nobody has to hand over a personal phone number to a stranger in another country.
Travelling together
The plan changed at the airport
Somebody is at the wrong gate, or the ferry moved, and typing it out is hopeless. One tap and you are talking, from whichever Tratok page you happened to be on.
Host video tours
A look round before anyone books
Providers can run a live video tour of a property for an interested guest, using the same calling machinery. A walk round beats a gallery.

What it needs from you

Almost nothing. You need to be signed in, and your browser will ask permission for the microphone the first time, plus the camera if you are making a video call. To be rung while you are away from the site, turn on push notifications in your notification settings.

Calls are one to one for now, and nothing is recorded.

Open any conversation on tratok.net and look for the two new buttons to get started.
