The Drip-Pricing Crackdown: Why the Price You See Must Be the Price You Pay

Industry

The Drip-PricingCrackdown.The price you see must be the price you pay.

For years, travel prices have grown on the way to checkout: a resort fee here, a service charge there. Regulators have finally had enough.

What drip pricing is

Drip pricing is advertising a low price, then adding compulsory fees one step at a time, until the total at checkout is far higher than the price that caught your eye. Resort fees, “destination charges” and booking fees are the usual suspects.

What changed

United Kingdom
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act made drip pricing an unfair practice from April 2025: compulsory fees must be in the headline price.
United States
The Federal Trade Commission’s rule on unfair fees took effect in May 2025 for hotels, short-term rentals and live-event tickets: the advertised price must include mandatory fees.
Europe
EU consumer law already requires the total price to be shown upfront, and enforcement is growing.

The direction is clear everywhere: the first price you see has to be the price you pay.

How Tratok does it

Tratok never had hidden fees to remove. The price you see is the price you pay, and it is locked for five minutes at checkout, so even a moving market cannot change it while you decide.

The first price
✕Drip pricing: low, with fees still to come.
✓Tratok: the full price, every time.
At checkout
✕Drip pricing: resort fees, service fees, booking fees.
✓Tratok: the same number you saw.
While you decide
✕Drip pricing: the price can change under you.
✓Tratok: locked for five minutes.

Drip pricing: quick answers

Is drip pricing illegal now?

In the UK since April 2025, and in the US for hotels and short-term rentals since May 2025, compulsory fees must be included in the advertised price.

What about optional extras?

Genuinely optional extras, like breakfast or parking, can still be added. Compulsory fees cannot be hidden.

Does Tratok add fees at checkout?

No. The total you see is the total you pay.
